FARMINGTON, Maine – The Thomas College baseball team earned a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) wins over UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday.
GAME 1: Thomas 5, UMF 2 (11 Innings)
UMF jumped out to a quick lead with a run in the top of the first. The Terriers evened it 1-1 in the top of the third when Bradly Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) scored on a fielder's choice. The scored stayed tied at one until the top of the ninth, when a Connor Rittenhouse (Dover, N.H.) double gave Thomas a 2-1 lead. The Beavers answered in the bottom of the innings to extend extra innings. The Terriers regained the lead in the 11th with a two-run single by Smith, followed by a Tyler Gee (Falmouth, Maine) RBI single that made it 5-2. The Beavers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 11th to give Thomas the victory.
Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass.) pitched three innings of relief to earn the win for Thomas, allowing a run on two hits.
GAME 2: Thomas 8, UMF 5
The Terriers scored twice in the top of the first, with Kelly knocking an RBI double then coming in on a Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) single to go up 2-0. UMF knotted it up in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs, then went up 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth after scoring three runs in the inning. Thomas started to chip away in the fifth when Alexander Miller (Brandon, Fla.) scored on an error, then John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to make it 5-4. Thomas tied it in the top of the seventh with a Kappelmann double, then took the lead on a Nicholas Cousins (Wells, Maine) double. Nick Bagley (Hancock, Maine) and Villanueva each drove in insurance runs to secure the 8-5 victory.
Alic Shorey (Gardiner, Maine) earned the win, pitching 1.2 perfect innings of relief.
Thomas will visit Husson for another NAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24 at 5:00 PM.
