WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Thomas College baseball team finished their Florida trip by splitting a doubleheader with Kalamazoo on Thursday.
GAME 1: Thomas 5, Kalamazoo 3
Thomas struck early, with Alexander Miller (Brandon, Fla.) scoring on a ground out to give Thomas a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Hornets took one in the first and second to take the lead at 2-1. Thomas evened it back up in the third, with a Jacob Lacroix (Berwick, Maine) RBI single tying the game at 2-2.
The Terriers gained the lead back with two runs in the top of the fifth. Nick Bagley (Hancock, Maine) scored on a sacrifice fly, followed by Connor Rittenhouse (Dover, N.H.) scoring on a bases-loaded walk. After Kalamazoo made it a one-run game in the top of the sixth, Miller gave Thomas their insurance run back with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 final score.
Ryan Scepansky (Blandon, Pa.) earned the complete-game win, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
GAME 2: Kalamazoo 6, Thomas 1
After two scoreless innings, the Hornets used a three-run third to gain a 3-0 lead. Kalamazoo added another run in the fourth then two more in the fifth to take a 6-0 advantage. The Terriers got one run in the bottom of the seventh, with Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass.) scoring on a groundout, but Thomas couldn't bring any more across and fell 6-1.
Lacroix took the loss for Thomas, giving up four runs on six hits in four innings pitched.
Thomas returns to Maine and will visit cross-town rival Colby on Monday, April 8 at 5:00 PM.
