Thomas Athletics Hosts Angst Movie Screening

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College Athletic Department, along with Thomas Student-Life, hosted a special screening of Angst, a 56-minute film and virtual reality experience that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and what students can do about it, on Tuesday evening.

"I am thrilled that athletics and student-life were able to team up to provide this very important opportunity for our students, said Director of Athletics Shanda Ness. "Supporting our student-athletes in all aspects of their lives is very important to Thomas Athletics and I am hopeful this movie was able to provide education on a difficult topic."

The films' goal is to have a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they've learned about it.  The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools.

When asked why it is important to make this movie available to student-athletes, men's lacrosse senior Harry Heald said, "The movie helps provide student-athletes with the healthy tools to manage stress and anxiety on and off the field."

"We have demands on the field, in the classroom, and in our individual lives," said field hockey senior Lindsay Morong. "While many of us are extremely busy, we neglect self-care with is so important for our well-being and our success. By being able to identify our problems and working on better coping skills, or recognizing when others need help, we can help our peers be successful as well."

Following the showing, there was a panel discussion including three Thomas student-athletes.

"I think it is really important to have things like this, where we can show a film about a less talked about topic, and then have that conversation that a lot of people are not willing to have," said women's lacrosse sophomore Meredith Wheeler." I think that is what is amazing about Thomas Athletics as well; we are able to create that comfortable environment to have the more difficult conversations."
