WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College women's basketball team will host the 2nd Annual Thomas Tip-Off Classic Saturday-Sunday, November 18-19 at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium on the campus of Thomas College.
The Terriers will welcome the University of Maine at Farmington, Lesley University, and Fisher College (Mass.) to participate in the two-day event. Thomas and Lesley will begin the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, with UMaine-Farmington and Fisher to follow at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, UMF and Lesley will tip-off at 1:00 p.m. followed by Thomas and Fisher at 3:00 p.m.
The Thomas Tip-Off Classic is presented by Bedside Manor in memory of Martha R. Fabian and KV Federal Credit Union. Admission is $2 each day with children under 10 being admitted free along with Thomas faculty, students, and alumni. Donations are greatly welcomed along with food items such as soups, peanut butter, jellies, spaghetti sauce, and cereals. Food items will be accepted for admission into the games. All proceeds from the event will go to the Messalonskee High School food pantry. Special thanks to Julie Fabian Benecke '92 of Bedside Manor and Christine Devine '92, M.S. About the Teams
Thomas (0-1) opened their 2017-18 campaign on Wednesday with a tough 72-68 loss on the road to Wheaton College (Mass.). Senior Sammie Griffin had a big game offensively as she held a game-high 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from behind the arch. Sophomore center Malorie Weaver followed with 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists while senior Jordan Turner chipped in with six points, six boards, and four assists.
Me.-Farmington (0-0) will begin their new season on Saturday after the Beavers were selected to finish eighth in the annual conference preseason poll. The Beavers will be under the direction of Jamie Beaudoin, who enters his 19th season. UMF's key returners include Cheyenne Malloy, who averaged six points per game, and Jenessa Talarico, who averaged 4.4 points per game.
Lesley (0-0) will start their season on Thursday as they travel to Lasell for their opening match. The Lynx were ranked seventh in the NECC women's basketball preseason poll after a 13-5 record in their conference last season. The team returns 11 of 14 players from a year ago including conference rookie of the year Cassidy Harrison.
Fisher (3-2) enters the Thomas Tip-Off Classic with five games under their belt along with three wins against Vermont Tech, the University of Maine at Machias, and SUNY Delhi. The Falcons are led by Madison and Murphy Carroll who average 19 and 18.8 points per game respectively. As a team, they average 77.2 points per game along with 37 percent shooting from the floor.
