GORHAM, ME – The Thomas College club track and field team competed at the University of Southern Maine Invitational on Saturday for the team's first meet of the 2016-17 season.
Six teams competed in events throughout the day for the USM Open I as no team scores were collected. Participating teams included: Southern Maine, Saint Joseph's (Maine), the University of Maine at Farmington, Colby, Husson, and Thomas.
On the men's side, Jarrod Ottman (Merrimack, N.H. / Merrimack) finished third overall in the one mile run at 4:31.02, just less than four seconds behind the winner of Abdi Hassan from the University of Maine at Farmington.
In the second heat of the men's 55 meter run, Fahad Hassan (Lewiston, Maine / Lewiston) finished second at 7.62, six hundredths of a second behind Andrew Porada of Saint Joseph's.
Thomas finished first in the 4x800 meter relay as Ottman, Billy Chambers (Waterville, Maine / Waterville), Dillon Sullivan (New Gloucester, Maine / Gray-New Gloucester), and Sam Traynor (North Billerica, Mass. / Tewksbury) ran to a time of 9:20.22.
Brandon Monroe (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) finished first in the first heat of the men's 200 meters at 25.42. Monroe also finished second in the men's high jump at 1.85 meters and eighth in the long jump at 5.69 meters.
In throwing competitions, Troy Worster (Mouth Vernon, Maine / Maranacook), Reid Wallingford (Standish, Maine / Bonny Eagle), and Antonio Martinez (Coral Springs, Fla. / Coconut Creek) finished in the top-five of the shot put competition. Worster finished second at 10.45m, Wallingford third at 9.22m and Martinez fifth at 8.81m. Worster also finished third in the weight throw at 9.46m.
On the women's side, Gabrielle Martineau (New Gloucester, Maine / Gray-New Gloucester) finished seventh out of 14 in the women's 55 meters at 7.94. She also finished sixth out of 21 runners in the women's 200 meters at 28.58.
Haylee Patterson (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine / Piscataquis) ninth out of 16 in women's shot put at 8.89 meters and eight in weight throw at 8.44 meters.
The Terriers next event will be on Saturday, January 14, as they compete at Bowdoin.
