Terriers Split Opening Doubleheader with UMPI

ORONO, Maine – The Thomas College softball team split their opening doubleheader with the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday at Mahaney Dome in Orono.  The Owls took game one, 9-4, while the Terriers bounced back with a 5-2 victory in game two.

Game 1: Me.-Presque Isle 9, Thomas 4

The Owls capitalized on three Thomas miscues in the opening frame to take an early 3-0 lead as Anaiz Diaz, Delaine Strout, and Hailey Davenport scored for UMPI.  The Terriers chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the second as Katlyn Coulter (Jefferson, N.H.)  smacked a homerun to left field, scoring Lauren Farina (Schenectady, N.Y.) to make it 3-2.

UMPI extended their lead to 6-2 in the following frame as Jackie Peers knocked in two runs with a single to right field.  Roni Shaw scored the third run of the inning as she came in on another Thomas error.  The Owls offense continued to pour it on in the fourth and fifth as they brought it three more runs on an RBI walk from Shaw, an error, and a single from Melanee Terry.  The Terriers plated two more in the bottom of the fifth to finish the scoring at 9-4.  MacKenzie Oberholzer (Greencastle, Pa.) came in on failed picked off attempt and Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine) came in on an RBI double from Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H.).

Sara Packard earned the win on the hill for the Owls, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned), while striking out three.  Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) shouldered the loss in 3.1 innings, five hits, eight runs (three earned), and struck out two batters.  Haley Littlefield (Mount Desert Island, Maine) allowed a run in 1.2 innings while Breanna Whitmarsh (Puyallup, Wash.) kept UMPI off the board in the final two frames.

Game 2: Thomas 5, Presque Isle 2 – Six Innings

The Terriers opened the scoring in the top half of the second as Farina ripped a double to right center to score LeBourveau after she reached on a double of her own.  The Owls answered with a run in the next frame as Terry scored on a throwing error, tying the game up at 1-1.  Thomas took the lead back at 3-1 as they tallied a pair in the third.  A single from Colpack scored Taylor while Colpack later came in on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the fourth, Terry cut the lead down to one for UMPI as she knocked a solo homerun to left center.  Thomas looked to pull away once again in the sixth as Coulter helped her own cause, hitting her second homerun of the day to left field to make it 4-2.  Taylor finished the scoring at 5-2 as her sacrifice bunt brought in Julia Nadeau (Randolph, Maine) who got on with her second double of the contest.  Coulter kept the Owls silent in the bottom of the sixth as the game was called due to time.

Coulter threw all six innings in the win for the Terriers in her first collegiate start, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned).  Marissa Reagle was given the loss for UMPI surrendering two runs in two innings of relief work.

The Terriers will sit idle until March 19 as they travel to Clermont, Florida for their spring trip.
