HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Thomas College men's tennis team dropped a tough 8-1 loss to Western New England on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.
In the defeat, the Terriers drop their opening match of 2017 at 0-1 while the Golden Bears improve to 2-1.
The Terriers' lone victory on the day came from Jared Waterhouse (Dayton, Maine / Thornton Academy) and Mark Amato (Manchester, Conn. / Manchester) in number three doubles as they defeated Yawgel and Vu Nguyen, 9-7, after trailing 4-0. Zachary Disch (Waterville, Maine / Waterville) and Ryan Chasse (Fort Kent, Maine / Fort Kent) dropped an 8-4 loss to David Kalamer and Luke Surawski in number one doubles while Ross Munn (Brunswick, Maine / Brunswick) and Kaleb Payson (Lamoine, Maine / MDI) fell 8-5 on the number two line to Justin Kohut and Daniel O'Neill.
In singles play, the Terriers came up short in all six matches with four matches needing a tiebreaker. Chasse fell short 4-6, 4-6 to Kalmer in number ones while Munn lost 0-6, 0-6, 4-6 in number two play. On the three line Disch was defeated 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, Waterhouse (3-6, 3-6), Payson (4-6, 6-7, 4-7), and Amato (6-4, 2-6, 4-10).
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday, March 12 as they face Wisconsin Lutheran College at 12:30 p.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
