Mariners Stun Terriers with Late Goals, 2-1

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's soccer team allowed two goals in the last 13 minutes of play as the Terriers fell to Maine Maritime Academy, 2-1, in the North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Smith Field.

In the loss, the Terriers season concludes at 8-9-1 (6-2-1 NAC) overall while the Mariners will advance on to the semifinals on Wednesday to face the second seed of Colby-Sawyer College.

The Terriers' offense pressured early in the first three minutes as junior Adam LaBrie (Yarmouth, Maine) missed two quick opportunities just wide.  In the fourth minute, the Mariners gained possession in front of the Thomas goal as Dalton Moore's shot rung of the left post to remain scoreless.

Thomas got on the board first in the 31st minute as Tevin Reid (Dorchester, Mass.) sent a centering pass in the box to LaBrie.  LaBrie's shot redirected off a Mariner defender and in for a 1-0 lead before the break.

Late in the second half, Maine Maritime looked to score the equalizer in the 77th as Moore took a shot from deep.  Terrier keeper John Villanueva (Gray, Maine) made a diving save to keep the ball out.  On the ensuing corner kick by Colby Clarke, the pass found the head of Ike Doiron who scored to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Terriers looked to counter with a chance in the 85th minute as Mariner goalie Joshua Reeks made a big save on Zenawi Bowen (St. George, Bermuda) after a through ball.  A minute after, Moore finally broke through as his deep shot from 20 yards found the top left corner for the game-winner at 2-1.

Villanueva was given the loss in goal, making three saves in the second half after relieving Jonathan Dutka (Durham, N.H.).  Reeks turned aside seven shots in the winning effort for the Mariners.

Thomas outshot Maine Maritime 23-16 while the Mariners held a 6-4 advantage in corners.
