WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team held off Castleton University for a 79-67 win on Friday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
The Terriers winning streak extends to four games as they now sit at 12-10 (9-6 NAC) while the Spartans drop to 12-11 (9-7 NAC).
The two teams swapped the lead throughout the first half until the Terriers finished on a 10-7 run to take a 36-33 advantage. Senior Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) converted 4-of-5 shots for eight points to help the Terriers as they turned the ball over ten times. Tondi Mushandu carried the load for Castleton with 13 points as the Spartans struggled from behind the arch at 3-for-13.
The Terriers held off the Spartans through the second as they struggled with Castleton's full court press. Sophomore Matt Allen (Barre, Vermont) knocked down three three-pointers to pace Thomas. Spartan point guard Jordan Nelson and Casey Belade combined for 21 points in the half as they could not overcome the small deficit. Freshman Demetris Webster (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) knocked down three clutch free throws down the stretch including an and one opportunity with 50 seconds left to secure the 79-67 victory.
Allen led four Terriers in double figures with 14 points and three assists while Gonzalez recorded another double-double on 13 points and 14 rebounds. Senior John Morgan (Sanford, Maine) added 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists along with 11 points and five boards from Webster.
Mushandu finished with a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds while Belade chipped in with 13 points and four rebounds.
The Terriers will host their senior day tomorrow as they take on Green Mountain College at 3:00 p.m.
