Men's Basketball Advances to NAC Semifinals with 77-71 Win Over Colby-Sawyer

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Thomas College men's basketball team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 77-71, in North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal action on Tuesday night at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.

In the win, the Terriers advance to the North Atlantic Conference Semifinals while the Chargers are eliminated from playoff contention.

In the opening minutes, the Terriers jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind quick layups from Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y. / Lawrence) and Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine / Lewiston).  Milani Hicks responded with a bucket and a three-point play for the Chargers to take a 9-7 lead.

Midway through the half, the Chargers offense fell silent for over four minutes, giving the Terriers a 12-point advantage.  After a 14-5 run for Colby-Sawyer, Patrick Coffey knocked down a three to notch the game up at 31-31.  The Chargers finished the half with a three-pointer from Taylor Grande and back-to-back hoops from Coffey to take a 40-35 lead at the break.

Colby-Sawyer held a small advantage to open the second until Jordan Derosby (Waterville, Maine / Waterville) buried a three for Thomas to tie the game back up at 44-44.  The Terriers looked to pull away as 7-1 run put them up by six with 12:40 remaining.  Coffey continued the hot hand as he scored eight-straight points for the Chargers to stay within two.

Late in the second, Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) hit a big three and Tailour Hall (Jacksonville, Florida / Edward White) finished a tough layup to put the Terriers up by six with 4:36 left.  Coffey answered back with a jumper and four free throws to keep it a one-possession game.

Down by six with 23 seconds remaining, Coffey added another three-pointer to bring Colby-Sawyer with three.  Simon finished on his free throws in the final seconds to end the scoring at 77-71.

Derosby netted a team-high 17 points and pulled in four rebounds for the Terriers while Simon finished with 15 points and five boards.  Gonzalez and Mackinnon each chipped in with 14 points in the win.

Coffey scored a game-high 30 points for the Chargers on 11-of-22 shooting, including a strong 4-for-6 from behind the arch.  Hicks added 13 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

The Terriers will face Castleton on Friday, February 24 in a 1:00 p.m. NAC Semifinal matchup at Husson University.
