WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College field hockey team shutout Castleton University, 4-0, to earn the final spot in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.
In the victory, the Terriers move on to postseason with a 4-11 (2-3 NAC) record while the Spartans finish at 6-12 (2-3 NAC). Senior Gabby Martell (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) tallied two goals in the victory.
The Terriers got the scoring started in the 8th minute as Kelci Faulkingham (Belfast, Maine / Belfast) settled a pass off a corner at the top of the circle. Fauklingham sent a hard pass to an open Martell on the left post and she slammed in a goal for a 1-0 lead.
Later on in the 31st minute, Tiffany Weeks (Kennebunk, Maine / Kennebunk) received a corner pass from Lindsay Morong (Liberty, Maine / Mt. View). Weeks lifted the ball up and over the Spartans defense and into the goal for a 2-0 lead at the half.
Seven minutes into the second half, Martell slammed in a ball that deflected off the Spartan keeper for her second of the game. In the 54th minute Morong picked up a loose ball and chipped in a goal to finish the scoring at 4-0.
Senior Abbie Charrier (Waldo, Maine / Mt. View) earned the shutout victory in goal for the Terriers after stopping ten shots while Meeghan Doris made three saves in the loss for the Spartans.
The Terriers will play in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday, October 26 with a time and opponent to be determined.
