BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Thomas College ice hockey team started their season with a 3-1 victory over defending NECHA Colonial Division North Champion University of New England on Sunday afternoon.
Thomas got on the board first with six minutes remaining in the opening period when Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) notched his first collegiate goal with assists from Justin Wentworth (China, Maine) and Rajhan Munnings (Cape Coral, Fla.) to send Thomas into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second period, Matthew Deveaux (Brunswick, Maine) lifted Thomas' lead to two on a goal assisted by Benjamin MacLennan (Portland, Maine) and Kappelmann. UNE answered back six minutes later to send the game into the third with a score of 2-1.
Tito Naranja added an empty-netter in the final minute to ice the 3-1 victory for Thomas.
Tom Green (Biddeford, Maine) picked up the win for Thomas, stopping 34 shots on goal.
Thomas returns to action on Friday, November 2 against Saint Joseph's (ME) at 7:20 PM at the University of Southern Maine.
