ORONO, Maine – The Thomas College baseball team fell to Division I University of Maine, 11-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.
The Black Bears improve to 13-17 on the season while Thomas drops down to 3-24.
Darren Kelly (Foxboro, Mass.) and Grant Corbett (Manchester, N.H.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Thomas. Dylan Ursino (Burlington, Mass.) and Alex Curtis (Monmouth, Maine) chipped in with an RBI each.
The Black Bears saw three batters with a multi-hit game as Jeremy Pena finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Colin Ridley knocked in four runs while going 2-for-4 as the dish.
The Terriers pushed across a run in the top of the first on a fielder's choice by Curtis that brought in Isaiah Arana (Orlando, Fla.) for an early lead.
Maine responded in the bottom of the second as a triple by Pena cleared the bases for three runs. On the ensuing play, a throwing error allowed Pena to score for a 4-1 lead.
The offense continued for the Black Bears in the fourth as Ridley crushed a grand slam to right field to bring the lead to 8-1.
Maine added three more in the sixth on two walks and a wild pitch. The Terriers scored two in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Ursino and a wild pitch that brought in Kelly.
Brandon Hubbard (New Gloucester, Maine) was given the loss on the mound for Thomas in three innings of work, scattering four hits and allowing four runs (three earned).
Trevor Delaite earned his first win of the season for the Black Bears in four innings, giving up four hits and one run (none earned).
The Terriers will host their first home game on Thursday, April 20, as they face Colby in a 4:00 p.m. start at H. Allen Ryan Field.
